Anniversary Steins - Jubiläums Krüge (1810-1910)

You would think that with the long history that links "German" with the word "Bier Stein", that The Oktoberfest would have been issuing them since the early days of this event. You would be wrong, kind of. It seems that the majority of steins released in the 1800's and into the 1900's were done so by the individual tents. There are a large variety of steins by Pschoor, Schottenhammel and the rest. But the 'Official' yearly Masskrug did not make it's appearance for 168 years!

The first official anniversary steins (shown below) weren't released until the 100 year anniversary in 1910! The steins were designed by Munich's own Franz Ringer who was quite famous at the time in the field of arts and crafts. He designed hundreds of steins during his career and his work is still in very high demand nearly 100 years later. Other anniversary steins include those issued in 1935 and 1985 for the 125th and 175th anniversaries respectively. There were no official Krug releases for the 150 year anniversary.

Official Posters - Plakate Since 1952, the Oktoberfest has commissioned an official poster or Plakat. The designs of which have several recurring themes that center around Munich and the Oktoberfest. The Münchner Kindl, radishes, biers, hearts and pretzels to name only a few. This years Plakat for 2008 can be seen here to the right. Starting in 1978, the official plakat was incorporated into a collectors stein or Krug. Every year since then has produced a new one. Some of the early pieces, as well as the 100 year anniversary steins, have become quite expensive. Several hundred dollars is more the norm for the '78 and '79 Krug and a nice 1910 edition can set you back over a $1,000 in the right auction. eBay does a brisk business in the modern steins, just search for 'Oktoberfest'.
