The Schottenhamel is as they say in Germany, "Tradition pur." In 1867, this small bier tent held only 50 people. Today, more than 6,000 can crowd inside. And true to tradition, the tent has remained Shottenhamel family owned to this day. It is also here that the Lord Mayor of Munich, currently Herr Christian Ude, taps the first keg on the opening Saturday at precisely 12 noon. Once tapped, the Lord Mayor exclaims "O'zapft is!" - "It's tapped!" No tents are allowed to serve bier prior to the ceremonial first tapping. And believe me, over 100,000 people eagerly await the sound of the 12 gun salute to signal that it's 'OK' to start pouring bier.

There is also an unusual concept when it comes to table layout. Unlike most other tents that have the standard picnic bench style seating, the Schottenhamel has square benches that allow you to get and know your tablemates a little easier. This 'Feng Shui' approach may be one of the reasons why I have enjoyed myself so much here.

This tent is very large and can seat 10,000 people in total. It's predominantly a younger german crowd with lots of pretty girls in traditional outfits. I think the Schottenhamel family do an excellent job in this venue and I highly recommend this tent.
