The Schottenhamel is as they say in Germany, "Tradition pur." In 1867, this small bier tent held only 50 people. Today, more than 6,000 can crowd inside. And true to tradition, the tent has remained Shottenhamel family owned to this day. It is also here that the Lord Mayor of Munich, currently Herr Christian Ude, taps the first keg on the opening Saturday at precisely 12 noon. Once tapped, the Lord Mayor exclaims "O'zapft is!" - "It's tapped!" No tents are allowed to serve bier prior to the ceremonial first tapping. And believe me, over 100,000 people eagerly await the sound of the 12 gun salute to signal that it's 'OK' to start pouring bier. |
